The Islay Woollen Mill was first established in 1883, and since its re-opening in 1981 has been owned and run by Gordon and Sheila Covell. The mill produces a wide range of products made to its own designs, and these include rugs, throws, scarves, caps, tweed jackets, and kilts, as well as raw fabrics.
The Mill is a traditional family-run business and uses two Dobcross looms dating from Victorian times. Some of the other machinery found in the mill is unique and historical and much of it is still in use. A team of seven is currently employed at the Mill, including Gordon's wife Sheila and his son Marcus.
The Mill creates designs and then weaves them on its own looms. The designs were featured in Hollywood blockbusters such as Braveheart, Forrest Gump, Rob Roy and Far and Away.
Although most of the material produced is sold to firms in England, Scotland, France and Germany, the Mill produces a wide range of their own products. For further details, please feel free to browse the shop.
